Evenings the house arranges

A silent evening.

For the guest who has had every kind of celebration but a quiet one: a table, candlelight, one musician, no phones, and for two hours nobody needs to say a thing.

One table, candlelight, a single musician who plays without a speaker, and a sky. The phones are left in the car. For two hours nobody needs to say anything at all.

Quiet is the luxury

Some of the people the house drives have heard every kind of celebration there is. What they have not had for years is an evening where nothing asks for their attention — no crowd, no host talking, no music they did not choose, no one taking a photograph.

II

The evening, as the house keeps it

Two to eight guests. A table set under the sky or in a room the house opens for you after its doors have closed. A chef who serves and withdraws. A single musician — a sitar, a cello, a voice — at a distance you hear but do not watch. Candles, not lights. Hand signals, not questions.

III

The one rule

For the first two hours, nobody speaks — not the guests, not the house. Phones stay in the car with your sarathi. It sounds strange in a sentence; at the table it is the first time in a long while that a meal tastes of itself, and the people beside you are simply there.

IV

And then, softly, words

When the music ends, the silence is lifted by the host, not by the house. Some evenings the talk that follows is the best of the year. Some evenings people simply go home, glad. The cars are waiting either way, warm and quiet.

Where the house can hold it

Under the skyNovember to February, on private ground near the city — a farmhouse, a vineyard, a terrace you have — where the stars are not drowned out.
Under a roofAny month: a private room, a terrace with a canopy, or a place the house can open after hours. The house asks; it does not promise a venue it does not yet hold.
For twoThe quietest version of all — an anniversary, a proposal, a return. A table for two, one musician, and the sarathi at the door.

What to tell the house

The date, how many of you, and whether it is a night for two or a few. The house writes the evening back, every part of it, with one figure; with a drink, at least thirty days ahead for the licence. Every guest is driven to the table and home again.

Questions guests ask

What is a silent evening?
A private dinner for two to eight guests by candlelight, with one musician who plays without amplification. For the first two hours nobody speaks and phones stay in the car; then the host lifts the silence.
Where is it held?
Under the sky on private ground from November to February, or under a roof in any month — a private room or terrace, or a place the house can open after hours.
Can it be just the two of us?
Yes — the quietest version of all: a table for two, one musician, and the sarathi at the door.
Is there a drink?
Only under a one-day licence held for the evening, for guests of twenty-five and over; the house helps obtain it thirty days ahead. The house’s drivers do not drink, and every guest is driven home.
