Five cars drive out of the city, turn in a ring on private ground and open toward each other. Between them, a room with no roof but the sky.
Five of the house’s cars drive out to a private estate, turn in a circle and open their tailgates toward the middle. Between them a canopy stands on its own frame; under it, the evening. Lamps on the grass outside; the cars, the only walls.
I
The arrival is the overture
Two of the five cars carry your guests; the house drives them out of the city in convoy and sets them down inside the circle, already lit. The other three left earlier with the evening itself — the musicians, the chef, the rugs and cushions, the lamps, the table — and the house’s people who will look after it.
II
Then the cars fall quiet
Once the last guest is inside, every engine is turned off and stays off. The tailgates become a bar, a pantry, a stage for an acoustic trio; nothing hums, nothing smells of fuel. The cars stop being cars and become the room.
III
An evening, not a party
Ten guests, perhaps twelve. A chef who cooks in front of you, music that needs no speaker, low seats and warm light, a sky you have not looked at since you were a child. The sarathis serve; your host does nothing but host.
IV
And everyone is driven home
The same cars that made the room carry your guests home — to the door, whatever the hour, by chauffeurs who have not touched a drink. Nobody drives themselves; nobody needs to.
How the house keeps it beautiful, and lawful
WhereOnly on private ground the house holds in writing for the night — a farmhouse, an estate, a vineyard, a villa’s lawn — near Karjat, Alibaug, Lonavala, Igatpuri or Nashik, or nearer if you have the land. Never a public beach, a roadside or a hill that belongs to everyone.
WhenNovember to February, when the nights are dry and cool. In the rains the house offers the silent evening under a roof instead.
The canopyA free-standing frame with fire-retardant fabric, set clear of the cars, with two wide openings. Nothing is tied to a car; no flame burns under fabric. The lamps stay on the grass outside.
The musicAcoustic — a sitar, a guitar, a voice, a violin, a santoor. Anything amplified ends before ten, with the permission it needs; after ten the evening is as quiet as the ground around it.
A drinkServed only under the host’s one-day licence, which the house helps to obtain thirty days ahead, and only to guests of twenty-five and over. The house’s drivers do not drink.
SafetyEngines off; a detector inside the canopy; a fire kit and a named person on the ground; the nearest hospital’s road known before the first guest arrives.
What to tell the house
The date and an hour; how many guests; whether you have the ground or would like the house to find it; what the evening is for — a birthday, a return, an engagement, a night for no reason at all. The house writes the evening back to you, every part of it, with one figure, at least thirty days before — because the licence and the ground ask for that. Nothing is held until the figure is settled.
Ask the house for an eveningOr write on WhatsApp: the date, the number of guests, and whether you have the ground.
Questions guests ask
Where can the circle be held?
Only on private ground held in writing for the night — a farmhouse, an estate, a vineyard, a villa’s lawn near Karjat, Alibaug, Lonavala, Igatpuri or Nashik, or your own land. Never a public beach or roadside.
How many guests?
Ten is the house’s number; twelve at the most. Two cars bring the guests; three bring the evening and the people who look after it.
Can there be music and a drink?
Acoustic music all evening; anything amplified ends before ten, with permission. A drink only under the host’s one-day licence, which the house helps obtain thirty days ahead, for guests of twenty-five and over.
Is it safe?
Every engine is off once guests arrive; the canopy stands on its own, clear of the cars, with two wide openings; no flame under fabric; a detector, a fire kit and a named person on the ground; and every guest is driven home by a chauffeur who has not had a drink.
How much does it cost?
Each evening is written in one figure — the cars, the ground, the chef, the musicians, the canopy and the people — at least thirty days ahead. Nothing is held until it is settled.
