The mandals
Lalbaugcha RajaThe most visited Ganpati in the city. Two queues: the Navas line, for those making a vow, can take very many hours; the Mukh Darshan line moves faster and suits elders and children.
Ganesh Galli and ChinchpokliMumbaicha Raja in Ganesh Galli and Chinchpoklicha Chintamani are minutes from Lalbaug — three in one evening, on foot between them.
GSB Seva Mandal, King’s CircleKnown for its gold and its order; queues are long but organised.
Siddhivinayak, PrabhadeviThe temple itself, open all year; busiest on Tuesdays and through the festival.
How the house does Ganpati
The car cannot go to the mandal’s door: the lanes of Lalbaug and Girgaon close to traffic in the festival. Your sarathi drops you at the nearest point the police allow, walks with you to the queue if you wish, keeps your shoes and bags, and is waiting at an agreed corner when you come out. For an elder, the house plans the shortest walk and the gentlest queue, and says honestly when a mandal is not a good idea that day.
The day of immersion
On Anant Chaturdashi the great idols go to the sea at Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar Chowpatty and Juhu, and whole roads close from morning into the next day. If you have a flight that day or the next morning, tell the house when you reserve: it leaves far earlier than usual, by a route away from the processions, and says so in writing the evening before. If you would like to see the immersion, the house takes you near and waits outside the closures.
