The Gateway of India

At the Gateway, by sea.

Mumbai's harbour begins at the Gateway of India: the boats to Elephanta, the catamarans to Mandwa, the tenders out to the yachts at anchor. The house does the part on land — the car to the jetty, a sarathi with your things, and the car again the moment you come ashore.

I

Elephanta

The ferries leave from the Gateway for Elephanta Island, about an hour across. The caves and the boats keep Mondays closed; a morning start leaves time for the long flight of steps, the caves and the boat back.

II

Mandwa and Alibaug

Catamarans for Mandwa leave from the Gateway in the cool months; the Ro-Ro with cars leaves from Ferry Wharf. Everything is on Alibaug by sea.

III

A yacht you have booked

Most of the harbour's yachts board from the Gateway's jetties by a tender out to where they lie at anchor. The house brings you to the jetty with whatever you are carrying, and is there when you come ashore.

IV

Where the car waits

Cars cannot stand on the Gateway's promenade. The car sets you down close by, your sarathi walks you to the jetty, and the car comes back when you are seen returning.

A day at the Gateway

Elephanta in the morning, lunch in Colaba or Kala Ghoda, the afternoon at the Taj across the road — the car held for the day and your sarathi between the boat and the table. Carry water and a hat to Elephanta; the island has little shade, and the steps are many.

The sea's word is final

The house holds to the operators' weather calls and their boarding times, without exception. If a boat does not sail, nobody is hurried onto another; the day is rearranged on land.

A new jetty, close by

A passenger jetty is being built by the Radio Club, a few hundred metres from the Gateway, with room planned for boats and for cars to wait. When it opens, boarding may move there; the house will say so on this page the week it does.

The house, on the water

The house's own hours on the water — the harbour by arrangement, a crossing to Mandwa — are being prepared with licensed operators, for the season from October to May. Put your name down to hear first.

Inside every written figure: the car, your sarathi, fuel, every toll, parking at both ends and GST. Nothing is added on the day, and no meter runs.

Last checked against the operators and the railways on 19 October 2026. Timetables are theirs and change; the house reads the day's before your car is timed.

Reserve a car for the GatewayThe day, the boat you are making, and how many are coming.

Questions guests ask

Is the Elephanta ferry open on Mondays?

How long is the ferry to Elephanta?
About an hour each way from the Gateway of India. Allow most of a day for the crossing, the steps and the caves.

Not on the promenade. The car sets you down close by, your sarathi walks you to the jetty, and the car returns when you come ashore.
Does Unlyra arrange yachts?
The house brings you to the jetty for a yacht you have booked and meets you ashore. Its own hours on the water, with licensed operators, are being prepared.
What is the Radio Club jetty?
A new passenger jetty being built a few hundred metres from the Gateway, planned with room for cars to wait. The house will say on this page when boarding moves there.
